When Trey got to the camp it occurred to him, he might have difficulty hauling Bambi to Rupert's store. Bambi had been in shock when Trey and Jennabeth had tied the fawn in the truck before. He was fine now and probably wouldn’t cooperate. Well, it had to be done. He was falling for a woman who was all wrong for him. He couldn't stand by idly and let that happen.

Bambi trotted out to the fence to greet Trey, ate the banana he offered, and followed him to the pickup like a puppy might do. Trey watched him nibble at the winter grasses, staying close to Trey's side, and he realized that Bambi was becoming a pet regardless of Trey's determination to keep him undomesticated.

He heaved the deer into the back of the truck. Bambi's eyes widened, and he tried to bolt. The vision Trey had entertained of a deer riding in a pickup like a German Shepherd wasn't practical. He lowered the tailgate and got Bambi down from the truck as quickly as he could, about the same time Jennabeth's jeep pulled into the drive.

Trey looped a rope around the deer's neck and grimaced. The last person he expected or wanted to see. After last night, he had been sure he wouldn't have to. If she was here to start another fight, she could go back home. He didn't owe her an explanation.

As Jennabeth pulled the jeep beside him, the sound of her engine startled Bambi again. He reared in the air. “There, there, boy!" Trey said, patting the side of Bambi's neck until he planted all four feet on the ground.

Trey shot Jennabeth a look of annoyance, which he hoped to hell she saw.

She got out of the jeep, easing the door closed behind her. "Sorry I spooked him," she said in that pleasant voice of hers as though nothing had happened between them.

"The truck spooked him before you arrived,” Trey said curtly. "I was trying to get him to ride in it. You don't have any suggestions, do you?"

"Why don't you put him in the cab with you?"

Was she teasing? “Let him ride on the front seat?"

Jenny grinned, a relaxed shimmer in her eyes. "You've mentioned he sleeps in a cardboard box. Will his box fit on the floorboard?"

"I think so."

"Give it a try why don't you? His scent on the box will calm him, and he won't get so scared.”

Trey gave her advice some thought while he studied her hairdo. Wrapped in a gathered puff of knit on top of her head, it looked so complicated, yet her approach to everything was so simplified. She bent down and picked up a stick. Her jeans beneath the waisted jacket she wore cupped around her rear in tiny pleats that formed a pleasing pattern.

When he thought about it, Jenny's ideas usually made sense. It had been her idea to adjust Bambi to the forest in small doses, a logical suggestion. He'd remember to tell Rupert what she'd suggested, assuming he ever got the deer over there.
